Calculation of the Rub’ al Khali Sand Dune Volume for Estimating Potential Sand Sources

چکیده
The Rub’ al Khali desert (or Empty Quarter) is the largest and perhaps most significant sand sea in world. Located on southern Arabian Peninsula, dune field has remained largely unexplored owing to harsh clime difficult terrain. This study takes advantage of geospatial technology (interpolations, supervised classification, minimum focal statistic) extract information from data contained global Digital Elevation Model (DEM)s, satellite imagery. main objective here identify map different forms within sea, estimate volume explore probable sources sand. analysis color strongly suggests that not completely reworked intermixed. If this true, a spatial variability mineral composition could be very revealing. red quite pronounced, (~36%) associated with yellow class. Yellow covers western part dunes seems transitional between white eastern field. might derived both local regional sources, or it less oxidized, reworked, have represents combination

Identification of Sand Dune Sources in the East Sistan, Iran by Using Mineralogical and morphoscopic Characterization of Sediments
Sedimentation in the dune fields of the Sistan Plain of Iran is the result of deposition of fine-grained sediment downstream of the Helmand River. Due to poor adhesion and low moisture content of soil particles, and the strong renowned Levar wind, dune fields mostly of Barchan and Nebkha types are created. This study aims to assess the physical, morphological and mineralogical characteristics o...
متن کاملThe zonation and ecology of a sand-dune spider community
Despite being a harsh environment, sand dunes are rich in invertebrates, with about 30% (188 species) of the British spider fauna represented (Duffey, 1968), and 53 species being strongly associated with coasts (Ratcliffe, 1977). Arachnologists have examined spider communities in relation to the seral succession of plant communities on sand dunes (e.g. Lowrie, 1948; Barnes, 1953; Perttula, 1984...
متن کاملThe Physics of Sand Dune Formation and Migration on Mars
Sand dunes have been observed throughout the surface of the planet Mars. Movement of these dunes has been theorized and inferred from the lack of craters on dunes. Dune movement has not yet been directly imaged, however. Understanding sand movement processes is vital to a correct Martian climate model, as well as the safety of future missions to Mars. Imagery from several Martian orbiters was a...
متن کاملThe effects of psammophilous plants on sand dune dynamics
Golan Bel and Yosef Ashkenazy Department of Environmental Physics, Blaustein Institutes for Desert Research, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Sede Boqer Campus 84990, Israel (Dated: May 11, 2014) Abstract Psammophilous plants are special plants that flourish in sand moving environments. There are two main mechanisms by which the wind affects these plants: (i) sand drift exposes roots and cov...
متن کاملThe influence of sugarcane mulch on sand dune stabilization in Khuzestan, the southwest of Iran
ABSTRACT- Over the past 50 years, oil mulching has been a common technique for sand dune stabilization in the southwest of Iran (Khuzestan province). However, concerns over the release of heavy metals from oil mulching have led to the search for alternative mulches that are capable of stabilizing sand dunes without environmental hazards. This study investigates the feasibility of using sugarcan...
